Student Data Privacy

How Oak Grove protects student data, and your rights under SOPPA.

Oak Grove School District 68 cares about the privacy of our students' data. We work to operate in compliance with the Illinois Student Online Personal Protection Act (SOPPA).

What SOPPA does

SOPPA took effect on July 1, 2021. The Act recognizes that Oak Grove shares limited information — such as names, dates of birth, and grade levels — with third-party educational-technology companies like PowerSchool, Pearson, and i-Ready in order to provide services to students. SOPPA sets the protections those companies must have in place so student data is never sold or given away.

Any company the district shares data with must sign a Data Privacy Agreement that specifies what data is stored, the safeguards in place, what the company may do with the data, and what must happen in the event of a data breach.

The full list of vendors and their Data Privacy Agreements is maintained on the Student Data Privacy Consortium's site:

Your rights under SOPPA

Parents and guardians have the following rights regarding their child's student data.

1. Inspect and review student information. You may request access to any covered information collected or maintained by the school or by third-party operators. Submit a written request by email to mercurio@ogschool.org. The school will respond within 45 calendar days (though a wait that long would be rare).

2. Request corrections to inaccurate data. If you believe your child's information is inaccurate, misleading, or violates privacy rights, you may request a correction in writing to mercurio@ogschool.org, with an explanation. The school will investigate and respond within 90 calendar days, either making the correction or explaining why not.

3. Request deletion of student data. You may request that certain data be deleted, subject to legal and educational retention requirements. Submit deletion requests in writing to mercurio@ogschool.org. The school will determine whether the data qualifies and respond within 90 calendar days.
