At Oak Grove School, special education is one part of the total educational program we offer to meet the needs of our students. A full continuum of programs and services is available for students with disabilities from early childhood through 8th-grade graduation. Services are provided at Oak Grove; when a student's needs are more specialized or require more intensive intervention, programs and services are available throughout the Special Education of Lake County (SEDOL) cooperative.
Referral for services
A student who is experiencing difficulties in school may be referred to the school child study team by a teacher, parent, principal, or other concerned person. The team — special education staff members and the principal — reviews referral information and data and collaborates with the classroom teacher to design intervention strategies to support the student within the general education classroom. The team also determines the need for a case study evaluation.
If an evaluation is recommended, the process is discussed with parents. An evaluation cannot be conducted without written parental consent. When the evaluation is complete, parents are invited to a meeting where the results are reviewed and eligibility is determined. If a student is eligible, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is developed.
Eligibility
A student may be found eligible for special education services under one of the following categories: Autism, Cognitive Disability, Deaf-Blindness, Deafness, Emotional Disability, Hearing Impairment, Multiple Disabilities, Orthopedic Impairment, Other Health Impairment, Specific Learning Disability, Speech or Language Impairment, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Visual Impairment.
Section 504
Students with disabilities who do not qualify for an IEP under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) may qualify for services under Section 504 of the federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973 if the student (1) has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, (2) has a record of such an impairment, or (3) is regarded as having such an impairment. To inquire about the identification, assessment, and placement of students, contact the school principal at (847) 367-4120, or in person at Oak Grove School, 1700 S. O'Plaine Rd., Green Oaks, IL 60048.
Related service logs
Students with disabilities may receive related services as part of their IEP. Copies of any related service logs are available to parents/guardians at their child's annual review IEP meeting, and may be requested at any time.
